How thick should concrete be?

Concrete slab thickness depends on what the concrete will be supporting. For pedestrian traffic such as concrete sidewalks, a 4" thick concrete pour will be sufficient. For vehicular traffic such as a concrete parking lot or apron, a 6" slab is preferred. Heavier industrial applications such as concrete loading docks or warehouse floors may demand 8"+ slab thickness. Always consult with an engineer if unsure of concrete thickness needed.

What does PSI stand for?

PSI stands for Pounds per Square Inch. It is a unit of measurement to determine the strength of concrete. Concrete gains its full strength after approx. 28 days of curing. 3500 psi concrete is generally sufficient for pedestrian concrete such as sidewalks. 3500 psi concrete may also be used for footings, around bollards. 4000 psi concrete may be recommended for vehicular traffic such as concrete parking lots, concrete aprons, or concrete ADA stalls. 4500 psi concrete may be utilized for more concentrated load areas such as concrete dumpster pads or concrete trash compactor pads. Even higher strength 5000 psi concrete may be recommended for extremely concentrated loads such as warehouse floors where forklift or other heavy lifting equipment operate on the concrete floor.

What kinds of Reinforced Concrete?

Beyond the PSI of concrete, additional steel or fiberglass can be added to concrete for various reasons. Traditionally steel rebar is used to reinforce concrete. Various diameters or gauges of steel rebar define additional strengthening properties. Fiberglass can also be added into the concrete mix to gain a similar property. Fiberglass throughout the concrete mix gets into every square inch of the pour and reduces the concrete's ability to crack. A new kind of rebar, made of fiberglass is also used.
